This online community was originally formed as a book club, or a small group, to discuss Ronald Sider's Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger over a brown bag lunch.  We often teased one another over how easily our conversations strayed from the book's content.  Our wandering conversations do not indicate a lack of social concern or compassion; they reveal intellectual curiosity and spiritual restlessness.  As a group we agreed to continue the journey together.  We also agreed to extend the conversation in our own faith community, and also through this online conversation.

The name Provocations comes from a collection of spiritual writings of Soren Kierkegaard, compiled and edited by Charles E. Moore.  Kierkegaard likened himself to a gadfly whose mission in life was to provoke his countrymen and make them think.

I am originally from North Carolina, so I am an avid Tarheel basketball fan. I received my Masters in Divinity from Evangelical School of Theology in Myerstown, Pennsylvania.  In May of 2007 I was ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Missional Leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. My wife Julie and I enjoy gardening, hiking, and raising our two young children – Jacob and Abigail.
